Palm Beach Florida Tobacco Lawsuit Against R.J. Reynolds Over COPD Results in over $2.5 Million Award.

Jury Awards Over $2.5 Million Dollars to Family of Former Smoker Who was Diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

A Palm Beach County jury in the 15th Judicial Circuit of Florida has reportedly awarded more than $2.5 million dollars to plaintiff in a tobacco lawsuit that was filed against R.J. Reynolds, styled Spurlock v. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Case No. 2007-CA-023631, alleging, among other things, that RJR was responsible for a former cigarette smoker’s chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a chronic inflammatory respiratory or lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs.

Over $2.5 Million Awarded in Florida Tobacco Lawsuit Over Former Cigarette Smoker’s COPD

According to reports, the jury found that cigarette maker RJR was 30% at fault in the tobacco lawsuit and that plaintiff was 70% at fault, but nonetheless, awarded $540,915.53 in compensatory damages and $2,000,000.00 in punitive damages, for a total award of $2,540,915.53.
